The Icelandic Bahá'í Summer School 2018

The Bahá'í Summer School 2018 will be held at Ljósafossskóli from 20 - 24 June. The school is about 60 km east of Reykjavík.  The main speaker of the school is Dr. Mojgan Sami. Dr. Mojgan Sami

Mojgan Sami was born in Iran to Baha’i parents. From the beginning of her life, her parents cultivated a sense of Baha’i identity and a dedication to service and community building. She served at the Bahá’í World Centre from 1996 to 2001. After leaving Haifa, she worked for the World Bank, the World Health Organization and the United Nations before pursuing her dual doctorate in urban planning and public health. Dr. Sami completed her doctorate in 2013 and is currently researching and teaching in the Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Sami is a community engaged scholar interested in the nexus between health, planning, social justice and equity. Her work challenges mainstream theories in planning and public policy through a critical lens of the dominant paradigms of human nature and social reality prevalent in social science discourse.

Adult programme

Dr. Sami’s program at the Icelandic Bahá’í Summer School is about applying the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh in the modern world: The integration of Revelation, Practice, Discourse and Community Building. Her talks are structured in the following manner:

Part I

Oneness & Interconnectedness: The Core of Baha'u'llah's Revelation
This is the introductory session for the week, laying the foundation of the conceptual advances that are prevalent throughout the Revelation of Baha'u'llah. These are not merely changes in social laws and moral principles.  The Baha'i Revelation calls for a transformation in the way we interact with one another and the planet.

Part II

Unpacking the Conceptual Framework for Action (Case Study of Power/Empowerment)
Following up on our deep dive into the conceptual advances in the Revelation, we unpack concepts such as "power," through a Baha'i lens.  What is power? How does our conceptual understanding of power change the way we look at current world challenges such as climate change, poverty and gender equality?

Part III

Transforming Relationships between Individuals, Communities and Institutions
Building on the conceptual framework for action, we will do some group exercises on the relationships between the three protagonists of social reality (Individuals, Communities and Institutions). The Baha'i community is unlike any religious community in the world.  There are no "experts" and individual "leaders" to tell us what to do. We approach community development through a humble posture of learning. How can this posture contribute to an ever-advancing civilization? What does this posture look like in our individual lives? In our communities? In our institutions? 

Part IV Planning at the Cluster Level with a Global Vision
Building on the deep reflections from the last three sessions, we will divide the group into two to four clusters (depending on attendance) and begin a process of reflection on the past cycles and possible planning for future community development.
